Houses on Carreira and Banana Streets

Ribeira Grande [“Cidade Velha”], Santiago Island, Cape Verde

Housing

This group evokes the city’s oldest buildings; the first houses built there date to 1495. The area is where the city’s wealthiest residents and royal officials lived. The ensemble has been subject to successive interventions which have altered it substantially, though it still retains the memory of the original urban layout; the evident use of stone in the structures is also significant. The current group consists of several row houses, most with a single floor and most likely of recent construction, in the area where historical accounts indicate the existence of two-storey manor house structures.
