House of Tomás António Gonzaga
Ouro Preto, Vila Rica, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Housing
This house was designed to accommodate the magistrates of the District of Ouro Preto (the seat of which was in Vila Rica). The Portuguese poet Tomás António Gonzaga (born in Miragaia, Porto) lived there from 1784 to 1789, during the time that he held this position. The beautiful house has a ground floor, an upper floor and, due to the steep slope of the street, a semi-basement. The façade is asymmetrical, with stone frames around the doors and windows on the lower floor and wooden frames around the upper windows, which have wrought iron balconies. The building is nowadays the headquarters of the Department of Tourism and Culture of the municipality of Ouro Preto.
