Ouro Preto has conserved a large part of its old houses and there are some fine clusters, like the one in the former Rua Direita do Pilar (the present-day Rua Conde de Bobadela). The steep slope of the street creates an interesting arrangement of façades of sobrados running down the hill in tiers, forming a harmonious whole despite the different dimensions of their frontages and the varied ornamental details (with many of these having been added in the 19th century).
