Historical Background and Urbanism

Humpata, close to Lubango, was founded by the great governor and captain-general of Angola, Francisco Inocêncio de Sousa Coutinho in 1769. It was elevated to town status in 1845. It is here, at Fazenda Jamba, that the Boer cemetery, classified as heritage status by government dispatch (92/00, no. 21, 26.05.2000) is located. In the Tchivinguiro Mission the main buildings were erected in 1897 and are presently visibly dilapidated. It was only in the 20th century that larger buildings were established there such as the Zoological Station (built before 1953), the Agricultural School and the Saint Joseph of Cheney Private School by the architect Vasco de Morais Palmeiro Regaleira.
