Éden Park Cinema and Porto Grande Hotel
Mindelo [Porto Grande], São Vicente Island, Cape Verde
Equipment and Infrastructures
The city’s most spectacular mid-twentieth century architectural group is perhaps the cinema, which stands beside a small typical 1950s-1960s hotel, the Porto Grande Hotel. Both cinema and hotel face the Praça Nova, in the most comfortable and elegant part of the city. The Éden Park, on the square now known as Amílcar Cabral Square, dates to 1945 and was later rebuilt by José Marques da Silva. A lively light pergola recalling the 1950s marks the polychrome wall, partially concealing the cinema’s façade, which has a pediment with late Art Deco features.
