The yard, being the main public space, extended from the captain’s house to the church whose bell-tower, originally the minaret, also served as a warning tower being high enough to dominate the new and old towns and the surrounding area. The idea of establishing three convents within the walls was dropped due to the insufficient number of available houses and the parish church composed of three naves became the most important Christian building. It is often mentioned as cathedral, but it was actually nothing more than a collegiate church in the diocese of Safi. With the growing of construction, other religious institutions were established in the new town. Lack of references to them prevents a more thorough knowledge or even the identification of their location. The Misericórdia must have been situated in some houses near the church.
