Lookout Tower of Borj Nador
Safi [Safim, Çafi], North Africa, Marocco
Military Architecture
This architectural structure is barely known. There is little information on its present state of preservation. It seems to be one of the few lookout towers of Portuguese origin that, until recently, was still standing in Moroccan territory, and which served as a surveillance post, included in the defensive system of the city of Safi. The authorities of the region of Doukkala-Abda, besides confirming its Portuguese origin, indicate that it was built in 1510.
This stone structure is set about seven kilometres to the north of the city of Safi and is rectangular (5.80 x 7.60 metres), with a vault and a staircase that leads to a terrace, enabling the observation of the surrounding area.
