Salt Pans
Sal [Pedra de Lume], Sal Island, Cape Verde
Equipment and Infrastructures
The production of salt was begun in 1804-1808 by Manuel António Martins and continued until 1980, undergoing successive modernisations. These included building a tunnel to the inside of the crater (1804-1808) and various means of transport (salt wagons, cableways) along with port facilities to export the product; the dock was named after counsellor Manuel António Martins in 1953, in homage to the “founder of Pedra de Lume”. The much deteriorated salt works complex is now a significant vestige for industrial archaeology.
