Sanctuary/Chapel of Our Lady of Succour
São Filipe, Fogo Island, Cape Verde
Religious Architecture
The modest architecture of the Chapel of Our Lady of Succour stands on a scenic coastal site about 10 km south of São Filipe. It was built by father Amaro Monteiro Pereira de Rebelo in the mid-eighteenth century and rebuilt or restored several times, namely in the early 20th century. The chapel is linked to religious legends such as the traditional disappearance of a sacred image later found back in its initial proper place – the reason behind its original construction.
