Cathedral
Bissau, Guinea-Bissau | Gulf of Guinea | São Tomé and Príncipe, Guinea-Bissau
Religious Architecture
The construction of the cathedral began in 1935, on the site of the existing building based on medieval style. The present day work was designed by architect João Simões in 1945, with architect Galhardo Zilhão. It was concluded in 1950. There is a reference to the renovation of the building by architect Lucínio Cruz. The church stands on an elevation, slightly behind the avenue, to create a small square. The cathedral has a style along traditional lines of a “modernized” neo-romantic derivation. We know of a reference to a first project by Vasco Regaleira for the cathedral, which the architect Paulo Cunha supposedly considered too complex to be executed.
