Equipment and Infrastructures
Although almost all were destroyed by war, some buildings deserve further study: The CUCA brewery and animal fodder factory, dated from 1957-1959, by Fernando Silva (1914-1993) was considered exemplary of its kind. The Central Workshops of the Benguela Railway (dating from around 1930) were pioneering with their huge yards with roofs resting on gigantic metal structures. They carried our all kinds of repair (metallurgy, forging, carpentry, electricity and painting), produced components and assembled locomotives. Electricity came from the dam on the Cuando River, built by the Benguela Railway in the area of the Catholic Mission. Paralyzed due to war, these workshops will for sure to resume part of their former functions. The railway station was recently ruined as a result of the civil war.
