São Tomé, São Tomé Island, São Tomé e Príncipe

Housing

An urban ensemble located in the northern area of the city, the former Salazar Quarter is interesting in virtue of its features. Built in the mid-twentieth century, it is basically composed of single-family houses typical of the Estado Novo. It is a residential quarter, of single-storey houses with an arched porch along Portuguese lines and roof with a traditional eaves, which urbanized a significant part of the planned area of the urban sprawl eastward from the old city. In architectural terms, it shows a tendency of the time: to use overseas the model of the social quarters of the metropolis, with a single-family and rustic expression. The quarter’s central avenue shows two monumental and symbolic obeliscs at each side.
