Fort or Small Fort
Kikombo/Quicombo, Kwanza Sul, Angola
Military Architecture
In the region of Sumbe, south of the city and near the coast was located the Fort of Quicombo dating from the 17th century. Built during the period of Dutch occupation (1645-1646) by the armies of Angola’s governor Francisco de Souto Maior, it was rebuilt by Salvador Correia de Sá who then departed to win back Luanda in 1648. It was also used for support for the slave trade in the region as an entrepot for shipping slaves. The ruins were classified as a National Monument by provincial decree no. 21, of the 2nd January 1924. By 1956 nothing remained of it but one bastion according to the architect Fernando Batalha (1963). These vestiges are presently well preserved.
