In 1923, under the rule of Norton de Matos the first request for the establishment of a cement factory was made. Set at the top of the slope overlooking the city, it began operating in 1953 for the supply of the whole city and region. It was equipped with a rotary kiln, crushing mill, silos, laboratories and varied support facilities.
