Equipment and Infrastructures
Other traces of the Portuguese presence in Kenya worthy of note are the following places where there are reports of material elements: in the area of Melinde (visited by the Portuguese until 1693), ruins of the trading post and the Captain’s House; the “tombs of the pillar”, near the Mosque of Juma (between the pier and the city), supposedly of Portuguese who had died here in the 15th or 16th centuries; the “Portuguese chapel”, on the coast, near the present day Hotel Gossip, which is said to mark the tombs of sixteenth-century Portuguese sailors (it is a small construction with a thatched roof); at Dondo, near Lamu Island, the ruins of the ground floor of a “Portuguese house”.
