The three fortified structures of the town are worthy of note because they somehow mark its urban area: the Fortress Saint John the Baptist, built between 1789 and 1795, in the shape of a star inserted in a regular polygon, according to the scheme of the pentagonal fortress of Daniel Speckle (1536-1589), located northwest of the town and aimed at defence against attacks from the high sea; the Saint Joseph Small Fort, with its original construction dating from 1764, rebuilt several times, south of the town, for defence of the sheltered port; and the Stronghold of Saint Anthony built in 1819 with the inhabitants financial contribution, to the east, in the shape of a square, as a defence against raids from the interior of the island.
