Safi [Safim, Çafi], North Africa, Marocco

Military Architecture

The wall built by the Portuguese in Safi apparently does not follow the outline of the former Almohad wall, and must have reduced its original extent. In any case, the walled perimeter is about three kilometres and the wall itself has impressive generous measurements: five metres wide, not including the moats, which are clearly visible in some areas, and about seven metres high.
The Portuguese wall, with a walkway, parapet and flanked by towers, has straight curtain walls with a few square towers and wide battlements with double loopholes. A 16th century image shows the shape of the walled perimeter that, being wider within the Land Castle and the great bastion, had two stretches of wall that led to the Sea Castle.
