Jesuit College of The Eleven Thousand Virgins
Daman [Damão/Damaun], Guzerate, India
Religious Architecture
The first convent complex built in Daman after the 1559 conquest was the College of the Eleven Thousand Virgins, with its respective church. Judging from maps, the complex occupied a large part of the quadrilateral of the fortification that existed in Daman before the conquest, sharing it with the installations of the captain and governor of the stronghold until the Society of Jesus was disbanded in the 18th century. It had at least two cloisters. Governor Julião José da Silva Vieira (1824-1834) ordered the college and church demolished in 1829-1830 so the stone could be used to build the quay in front of the square.
