Church of Our Lady Of Remedies
Daman [Damão/Damaun], Guzerate, India
Religious Architecture
The Church of Our Lady of Remedies was founded and built in 1607 by Rui de Mello de Sampaio, captain of the city, as indicated by an engraved stone in the chancel. It gave its name to Campo de Remédios, a Catholic neighbourhood situated south of Daman’s fortified perimeter. The church became the parochial seat in 1673. The nave’s roof is new and much lower than the original one, even lower than the profile of the chancel’s vault. The outside abutments of the nave walls indicate that the church was or was meant to be vaulted. The retable is from the ‘interior room’ for the Jesuit college’s students, as are the paintings; the tabernacle came from the Church of the Glory from Mazagaon in Mumbai and the pulpit from the Dominicans.
